A sort of introduction: Juxtaposing photographs with quotations by Robert Walser, Aldo Rossi, Gianmaria Testa, Michel de Certeau, Siegfried Kracauer, Walter Benjamin, and links.
The Pedestrian’s preferred transportation mode is obvious. Besides rail-bound mode.
The Pedestrian is widely interested: he strolls through medieval cities and industrial wasteland, transportation axes and areas of tourism, centers and borders, urban and suburban and periurban areas, places and non-places (Marc Augé). The Pedestrian focuses on structures rather than on people. By the way, the Pedestrian’s experience shows that most places are not crowded most of the time.
This site is a homage to printed postcard booklets, too. The Pedestrian is also a sort of not only resident tourist.
The Pedestrian has a background in geography. Fuzzy geocoding his photographs mostly by street names is not only his foible but also creates a sort of Verfremdungseffekt. Photographs do not re-present the world. The sequence of the cities on this site is inspired by the travelling salesman problem (TSP): Given a set of cities and their pairwise distances, the TSP is the problem of finding a tour that visits each city exactly once and that minimises the total distance travelled.
