The Gotthard railway base tunnel consists of two parallel single-track tubes, each with a length of 57km. The new Gotthard tunnel connects the north portal in Erstfeld (Uri) with the south portal in Bodio (Ticino) and should become operational at the end of 2016. The breakthrough in the east/west tube was achieved on 2010-10-15/2011-03-23.
