Löwendenkmal/Lion Monument | Luzern/Lucerne | Switzerland

A romantic representation of history: The Löwendenkmal/Lion Monument is a sculpture designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and hewn in 1820–21 by Lukas Ahorn in a former sandstone quarry (landscape gardening by Hans Conrad Stadler). It commemorates the French king’s Swiss guards who died in Paris during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries in 1792.
